Statement: NPP Women Caucus In Parliament Condemns Delali Kwasi Brempong Of The NDC For Bastardising Women

The NPP women caucus in parliament has learnt with great shock and disbelief of comments coming from one Mr. Delali Kwasi Brempong, who is said to be the NDC parliamentary candidate for the impending bye-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, where he took on the NPP for electing a woman to represent them in the bye-election.

In an interview he granted citi tv, the video of which has gone viral on social media, the NDC candidate is heard saying that, “The most important thing is that NPP made a mistake, they chose a woman”.

The caucus condemns in no uncertain terms this reckless and misogynistic comment from him. It is quite surprising that someone who is seeking the mandate of his constituents, a lot of whom are women, to represent them in Parliament, sees nothing wrong with casting aspersions at and insulting women. Yet, he expects these same women to go out and vote for him on the D-day, how ironic!

Beyond the condemnation, we also demand that he retracts this statement and renders an unqualified apology to, first of all, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, and to all women particularly those of us engaged in active politics. We certainly do not deserve such insults from him.

Women have proved their worth in all walks of life and no nation can develop without a significant number of women in public life.

More worrying is that he is making this denigrating comment against women at a time a spirited campaign is being waged by civil society organizations and relevant stakeholders, including the Speaker of Parliament to increase women representation in parliament because they are least represented in the august house.

We hope and expect Mr. Brempong to realize his unpardonable mistake and do the honourable thing to possibly redeem his battered image.
