Good old Adu Gyamfi Senior High School has over the past eight years demonstrated unparalleled strength in soccer in Ashanti Region to the admiration of all but are gradually beginning to fizzle out into oblivion and with this year’s inter-schools soccer competition approaching, many have been asking the multi-million question ‘is Adu Gyamfi taking this year’s competition by storm’?
That question though may be easy to answer if football speaks a certain language. The answer is an obvious no.
The four times champions seemed not to have adequately replaced their talismanic players whom all completed last year. With about seven key players of the team completing last year and lack of adequate replacement found for them, the Adu Gyamfi team may not be the Adu Gyamfi old.
The new team however may not have the strength and depth of talent of like the previous batches but champions they say die hard.
The team managed a 1:0 victory of Jachie Pramso, then drew o:o with with a very fine Aduman SHS side before losing on penalties to them. The ADGASS team then posted a 2:0 victory over Tweneboa Kodua SHS in their build up to this year’s qualifiers.
After the four team tournament hosted by Adu Gyamfi, the team then traveled to Sekyedumasi to play a two team friendly. They won 2:0 in the first game and lost 1:0 in the other match.
The former Champions are drawn in the same group with Antoa SHS, Mankranso SHS and Komfo Anokye SHS and is scheduled to take place on the 15th November at Opoku Ware School.
With their last year’s Coach, Lawrence Kalusha out of the country pursuing other interest elsewhere, the Adu Gyamfi team seemed to have lost a precious asset. However with back to batan Micheal Opoku teaming with up with Attah-Khalid Osei (Alhaji) and ably supported by other lieutenants, the ADGASS team can still rediscover their glory days.
The four times champions last won the competition three years ago and with their 50th Anniversary coincidentally falling this year, perhaps that could be an extra motivation to stake a claim for the trophy.
