Chairman Asare – Bediako is the Chairman of the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Asokwa Constituency. A position he has held close to 24 years – from 1994 to date. As a bold, courageous and brave young man at the time, he defied the odds and the unfriendly political environment under the then former President Jerry Rawlings and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to take a frontline leadership position in the opposition NPP in the face of political victimisation political opponents of the NDC and their businesses were subjected to.
His first rise to prominence at the frontline was when he became the Chairman of the NPP at the Asokwa Constituency in 1994, and from then, he has excelled in his role and occupied the seat to date. One would wonder how Nana Asare – Bediako could occupy the chairmanship position of the constituency for that long a period, but to those who know him very well, it is not surprising. Besides just focusing on his domestic role and responsibilities as the Chairman of the Asokwa Constituency, he is always readily available to render support to party people from other constituencies. The grassroots in the region and beyond look up to him as their father due to his awesome fatherly traits. As the current Chairman of the Constituency Chairmen of the Ashanti Region, he has performed to the satisfaction and admiration of the rank and file of the party. He understands the suffering of others and always makes the effort to do something to alleviate that suffering. While many take advantage of his compassionate nature as his weakness, he uses it to see the needs of those he leads and to determine the course of action that would be of greatest benefit to all. His house is practically the home of the party people in the region as he welcomes every tom, dick and harry in the party as and when they wish to visit. He has groomed and mentored a lot of the party officers and activists in the country and beyond. It is not surprising that he serves on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Conflict Resolution Team in the party’s stronghold, Ashanti region. As a leader, he is not known for any egoistic and primitive need for power, attention, or establishing his personal agenda and interest at the expense of the general interest of the party.
One key quality that has contributed to his success as an entrepreneur is integrity. He is known by all for his adherence to moral and ethical principles; the soundness of his moral character, and uprightness. This has also been a vital characteristic for his political leadership. As a political leader who possesses integrity, he has won the trust of people because he never veers from inner values, even when it might [selfishly] benefit him to do so. Any leader must have the trust of his followers. This requires the highest standard of integrity, and this has been one of the contributing factors to the success of Chairman Asare – Bediako as a political leader.
As a committed and selfless young man, he offered his building to the party to be converted as an office for the party. This was at a time in the early nineties when one, especially businessmen, needed to be extra careful and cautious in supporting the activities of the opposition NPP. In addition to this, he donated two vehicles to the party. In the face of adversity and victimization, he remained and stayed focused on the bigger goal of securing democracy. He stood by his convictions, and supported the cause of the party. He is the type of leader who does not allow himself to be dragged down when faced with challenges; instead, he finds ways to turn a difficult situation into an opportunity and look for creative ways to reach set goals in the face of constraints and limitations.
He is very flexible as a politician. He understands the give-and-take aspects of politics, and possesses the ability to find the common ground. As a smart and good politician, he listens carefully to all sides; to not only hear their arguments, but to especially learn what it will take on behalf of all parties involved to reach a consensus. This characteristic allows political leaders to recognize setbacks and criticism, to learn from them and move forward.
Chairman Asare – Bediako has a healthy emotional IQ and as such moves above his emotions, conditionings, and his fixations to specific outcomes to think logically in his judgments. In other words, he is rational and in control of his emotions and when others are going through the emotional roller coaster, he is there to guide them through it. He does not make himself look good by assaulting others. He is not the type of leader that takes others down so that he will go up. He is more of a collaborator than a competitor, and a natural mediator rather than one that creates conflict, tension and separation.
Chairman Asare – Bediako has always been a leader in a true sense. Even before becoming the constituency chairman of Asokwa, he was a prolific politician and was revered, especially at Asokwa. It was getting involved and helping the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition in the community that made him a revered political activist and later on a politician known all across the country. He boosts of qualities and habits of effective leaders that made him a statesman and a leader of the highest repute in the NPP. Even political parties not having friendly relations with the NPP admire him much.
It is a common practice that many people play it safe when it comes to anything related to their work or professional life. Taking risks, even a minor one, is not everyone’s cup of tea. That is the reason why most successful people are the ones who take risks in their life and come out triumphant. Chairman Asare – Bediako is one of such political operatives who are very bold and courageous to take such calculated risks. The political risks are akin to the risks taken in real life. So much is at stake that sometimes people put their entire wealth or whatever they have at risk, just for a business venture. Chairman Asare – Bediako always urges people around him and his mentees about taking risks, although calculated ones in the start. The more you will know about him, the more you will be inclined to take calculated risks in life and benefit from this act rather than fail.
Chairman Asare – Bediako is a great communicator. And it is not limited to just being a great speaker. He is a great listener. He is a leader par excellence as he knows how to talk to any person, group or audience regardless of their background, age, ethnicity, gender, etc. And that is why he truly deserves all the praise for being an immaculate person having perfected the art of communication and more importantly with respect.
Chairman Asare – Bediako is extremely inclusive in his leadership style and people from all backgrounds conveniently approach him to offer ideas, suggestions, etc. He seeks to ensure that he does a comprehensive and broad consultation especially with his colleague party officers in the discharge of duties. This important skill makes his colleagues, subordinates and the grassroots take ownership of party decisions, because he includes them in the decision making process.
While the political arena is often considered a dirty game where participants fight for power, influence and money, there have been political leaders who have left a lasting impact on our world. These leaders do not believe in the excessive fight for power, influence and money, and Chairman Asare – Bediako is one of such selfless, honest, clean and decent politicians.
He is also known for valuing cooperation among party people. He understands that the success and stability of the party benefits all members, and is committed to ensuring that party officers continue to cooperate and work well together. He does his best as a leader to encourage cooperation and build consensus by getting others on board and galvanizing them to work together to achieve targets and goals.
Leaders who engage the best talent and expertise get short-term hard work done while maintaining high esprit de corps. Chairman Asare – Bediako has mastered this skill. He does not do things alone, and he does not pretend to. He is a team player. He is very good at inspiring support or cooperation by building a rabidly devoted team that its members would put their lives on hold for the sake of a mission. This explains why he has high levels of support and engagement among his team of leaders at the Asokwa constituency and in the region. Needless to say that he served on the National Campaign Team of the NPP for the 2012 General Elections.
Chairman Asare – Bediako has nurtured and supported the party from its inception till date. He is one of the well-respected, revered and most experienced political leaders in the party. He is endowed with all of these qualities, and even more. He is the kind of leader that aspires to respect different views, analyze problems, and identifies the best solutions – not based on loyalty to him, but rather based on what is good and right and in the best interest of the group that he leads. He does not suffer from a self serving bias. He does not support a sense of self-serving entitlement especially when it is counter-productive for the society as a whole. Chairman Asare – Bediako is a strong and decisive leader. No matter which side of the political fence you live on, he is good at moving the collective agenda of the party forward from a leadership perspective. That is the acid test of leaders: getting things done.
