The Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Mr. Daniel Mckorley, has promise to renovate the tennis court at the Accra Sports Stadium with a sum of GH¢50,000.00 ahead of the 2017 West Africa Open Championship.
The event is billed for 24-29 April and registration for participants ends on Friday, April 21.
He made the revelation during the launch of the 2017 McDan West Africa Open, adding that he will ensure the facility is maintained for future events.
This year’s competition is expected to draw participation from local and foreign athletes with the winner taking home a whooping USD10, 000 cash prize.
McDan Group of Companies have for the past years supported the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) in the areas of financing, assisting players and developing the sports in the country. The company bailed GTA in 2013/2014 when banned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and paid 10000 dollars for affiliation fee.
Speaking at the launch ceremony on Friday, Mr McKorley said that his outfit is committed to contribute to the development of Tennis in the country.
He added that the company will put in efforts to organize three junior championships to develop and prepare young talents in the country for the Davies Cup next year.
The president of the GTA, Mr Isaac Aboagye thanked McDan for his immense contribution in developing the discipline in Ghana.
“I want to thank McDan Group of companies for the effort they put into the sports. They promise to paint all the courts and repair the rails to get the place in shape for the tournament. For the past two years they have been sending two players and promise to organize three junior championship for the Davies up next year,” he said.
On his part, Mr Aboagye promised to raise champions and called on other corporate bodies to help the other least financed sports in the country.
The Technical Director of the National Sports Association (NSA), Mr Joshua Mensah also commended the authorities of McDan for their support in renovating the courts and appealed to other corporate bodies to emulate the gesture.
