Mary Posch-Oduro, a National Treasurer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party-NPP has commended the First Lady of the Republic, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo for adding her voice to the numerous calls to extend the current three months maternal leave to at least three-half months. This, the First Lady said would be in consistent with provisions in the International Labour Organization’s [ILO] Maternity Protection Convention of which Ghana remains a signatory.
According to the aspiring National Treasurer hopeful who is also a mother, there is no better time for Ghana to look at implementation of the Convention to protect and enhance the health benefits of both mother and child than now. Mary Posch-Oduro said “the bedrock of every society is the family and families are built around mothers”. She therefore ask Government and employers not to further delay in the implementation of the Maternity Protection Convention. “I would ask my husbands, fathers and brothers to also support the call of our First Lady and Mother of the nation to get this policy implemented if we all share in the spirit and wisdom underpinning the Convention”. Mary Posch-Oduro pleads.
