H.E Erastus Mwencha parting message as AU deputy chairperson as Ambassador Quartey takes over

Today marks the end of yet another era for me.

I have had the humble privilege to serve Africa in the capacity of the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission for the last nine years. Today I handover this position to a man well known to me for a long time, a friend and a true Pan-African, Amb. Quartey Kwesi. I couldn’t be more proud of you my brother and I wish you well and may your wisdom precede you in your new undertaking.

To my family, I wish to thank you most sincerely for being my support system. For being patient and understanding throughout the years (especially my dear grandchildren), when the job demanded more time from me, at your expense, I am truly blessed to have you.

To the Government and Republic of Kenya, to H.E President Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, thank you for your endorsement, nomination and granting me the opportunity to represent the Nation and the Region, in this humbling yet great capacity. I remain deeply appreciative.

To the Chairperson H.E Dlamini Zuma, the Commissioners, colleagues and the African Union family, accept my deepest gratitude for your readiness to always support and assist in the fulfilment of the mandate of my office and the call to serve this great continent.

To the Bureau of the Deputy Chairperson, I am deeply grateful and proud of each and everyone of you for the journey we have traveled together. Your support and resourcefulness is commendable. Each of you always went beyond the call of duty to assist in the realization of the goals we set as a team.

To the PRC, with whom we interact more regularly and closely, accept my gratitude. I must say I am proud of the efficiency at which we conduct the business of the Union.

To the partners, the AU Partners Group, I thank you. Without your support, my work and that of the Commission, as well as the modest achievements we have recorded, would have been considerably more difficult to accomplish.

To my friends at different levels beyond mention, and here on social media, I want to thank you and wish you prosperity in your endevours as we strive to make Africa a great continent.

God bless you.

Asante. Thank you. Merci. Ameseginalehu. Shukraan
