This year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards will host the top 3 most vibrant fan groups in the music industry in Ghana under one roof. ‘Shatta Movement’, ‘Sark Nation’ and ‘Bhim Nation’ are the three fan armies which correspond to arguably the current top 3 musicians with the most youth listeners in Ghana and also the most awards among their peers namely, ‘Shatta Wale’, ‘Stonebwoy’ and ‘Sarkodie’. Ghanaian music lovers have expressed their excitement about this.
Though many deem it not possible, the VGMA, one of the most respected entertainment brands in Ghana, has already secured seats for arguably the 3 biggest names in music among the youth at this year’s event. With controversial artiste, ‘Shatta Wale’ performing at the VGMA Nominees Jam in Kumasi and his public statements encouraging fans to vote for him to win the ‘Artiste of the Year’, many music lovers have already dubbed this year’s edition as extraordinary and full of surprises. Considering the past feuds between Shatta Wale and the organizers of the VGMA, many have been surprised at his recent utterances. For instance, this month at the ‘Commonwealth Hall Artistes’ Night’, ‘Shatta Wale’ said, “The award is due! Tell them that I’m back!”, as he performed to the crowd at the University of Ghana. His musical rival, ‘Stonebwoy’ has also made some related comments on social media attracting fan attention. Ghana’s most celebrated rapper and the only artiste to receive more nominations than anyone at the VGMA since its inception, Sarkodie, has also expressed his appreciation for the nominations this year. Therefore fans on social media have begun debating on how many awards their favourite artiste will take home, or better said, how many awards each nation will take home.
Many cannot recall the last time anyone has seen these three ‘musical gods’ on the same musical platform doing what they do best, and it is for this reason that Ghanaians are excited about the VGMA 2019. Ama Sekyere, a student at the University of Ghana, Legon, described this year’s VGMA as far from a storm in a teacup. “Everybody is going to be talking about the VGMA after the show because I am sure something is going to happen. Looking at Shatta, Stonebwoy and Sarkodie in the same room! Omg! Definitely something will happen. And for me, it’s the last chapter to settle ‘who is who’s since all three of them have been nominated for the ‘Artiste of the Year”, and Sarkodie looks like he will be moving on to other things than music so he might not be so active in the future.”
The VGMA 2019 will see a competition not just between Ghanaian artistes but also between fans as they will ‘battle’ for the loudest cheers in the auditorium when their favourite musicians are mentioned. The VGMA is scheduled to come off on the 18th of May 2019 at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra – Ghana.
