Drake Tops IFPI World’s Best Recording Artist 2018

Drake has emerged as the world’s best recording artist by IFPI global music report for 2018.

BTS who made a shock entry in the year under review came second followed by 2017 winner Ed Sheeran at number 3.

Drake is the only artist to ever hold this title multiple times, with his first being in 2016.

Drake released his scorpion album June last year and songs from it, “God’s Plan” In my feelings and “Nice for what”, broke multiple streaming records. It became the first album to reach 1 billion streams across all platforms worldwide and “God’s Plan” broke first-day streaming records on Spotify and Apple, with over 14 million streams.

According to the IFPI 2018 report, global recorded music market grew by 9.7% is the fourth consecutive year of global growth and the highest rate of growth since IFPI began tracking the market in 1997.

Previous recipients of the award are One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014), Adele (2015), Drake (2016) and Ed Sheeran (2017). According to the announcement, the award reflects an artist’s worldwide success across digital and physical music formats, from streams to vinyl.
