Kwame Bonah Osafo Ampomah, an MBA Accounting and Finance student of the University of Professional Studies, Accra has been elected as the President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) at the 23rd Annual residential congress of the Union held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with Ms. Lily Appiah an MSC Educational Innovations and Leadership Science student of KNUST as his vice president.
Mr. Bonah polled 163 Yes votes after his only contender in the race Nana Kwame Asafo Adjei Ayeh had been disqualified from the race on grounds that his running mate was canvassing for votes when he hadn’t appeared before the vetting committee.
Mr. Asafo Adjei after he had been disqualified by the electoral commission sought for a refuge in the Judicial Committee of GRASAG praying the committee to quash the decision of the EC, arguing that the vetting panel was unconstitutional based on the composition of the panel.
The JC, however held that the vetting in which Asafo-Adjei’s running mate took part in, was unconstitutional hence the decision and report of the committee was null and void after the EC argued that they allowed such processes on humanitarian grounds. The JC ruled that, since the vetting process of the second running mate of Asafo-Adjei was null and void, the committee thereby disqualifies Asafo-Adjei since he has no approved running mate at this time.
It would be recalled that Asafo-Adjei’s first running mate Mr Enoch Agyare Sakyi resigned approximately two weeks to the National Delegates Congress citing health issues and other matters as grounds for his resignation.
It came to light at the petition hearing that, Mr Agyare Sakyi’s resignation was not as a result of the reasons he stated, but because he is not a student.
Mr. Kwesi Abaidoo Yamoah, popularly known within the students circus as Rev. Jot, a one time NUGS Projects and Programs hopeful polled 102 votes in the Organising Coordinator contest to beat his closest contender Kingsley who could only manage 48votes with Yusif trailling with 31votes.
The 23rd Annual National Delegates Congress held at KNUST began on 3rd Aug 2017 and ended on 6th Aug 2017 under the theme
“60 YEARS ON; SUSTAINING A NATIONAL CHARACTER OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION FOR JOB CREATION AND INDUSTRIAL TRANSFORMATION”
