Ghanaian referee Eric Owusu Mensah is warding off attacks on colleague banned referee Joseph Lamptey following FIFA’s investigation of the later’s involvement in manipulating the result of FIFA world cup 2018 qualifier game between South Africa and Senegal last year.
The Ghanaian referee was subsequently slapped with a life ban after the case had been sat through at CAS in attempt to overturn the initial punishment.
According to the FIFA’s disciplinary committee, Joseph Lamptey was involved in what it described as manipulation of the result of the game with an inducement.
The FIFA’s investigation revealed the Ghanaian referee connived with a syndicate to manufacture the result thus informed their decision to permanently revoked the badge of the FIFA referee for life.
Owusu Mensah who has worked with the banned referee J.O Lamptey for in Ghana is however holding brief for his countryman arguing the J.O Lamptey he had known for years wouldn’t engage in such.
Referee Owusu Mensah Speaking on Kessben FM opposed to the widely view of J.O Lamptey taking money to manipulate the result of the game.
Owusu Mensah explained after repeatedly watching close a video footage of the incident which led Lamptey awarding a penalty to South Africa, he saw his colleague communicating with his assistant which gave him a wrong information for the penalty call.
FIFA on Tuesday came out with a fresh ruling on the matter by ordering a replay of the game between South Africa and Senegal in November 2017 with a life ban to the Ghanaian referee.
