Moments of joy characterising free SHS have not deluded us as Ghanaians and ringing at a crescendo, we combine that joy with a new one: President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced similar support for free registration of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) by the year 2018.
The burden on parents and guardians to pay BECE registration fees of their wards will be lifted by the government.
As a concerned citizen of Sekyere Afram Plains, I would stand in for parents and guardians in the area and Ghana as a whole, to pour praises on President Akufo-Addo for that move.
It will go a long way to encourage more parents to enrol their wards in school to indicate that education development is important to the growth of a nation.
On behalf of the people of Sekyere Afram Plains, I commend the government for another giant step yet to be made towards the education sector, this time for the basic level.
BECE registration has always been an albatross around the neck of the people in poor Sekyere Afram Plains, affecting advancement of education in the area and that news of this announcement is very welcoming.
On the other hand, I would like to appeal to the government to help make roads motorable in the Sekyere Afram Plains area.
Communities are quite far from the district capital, Drobonso but if the roads are made motorable they will help schooldchildren commute long distances with ease and also help commercial acitivities to speed up in the area.
Yes, government has done well by constructing the Kumawu-Drobonso road but there are a lot more to be done.
It is regretable to recall that in this year’s BECE, some BECE Candidates though in Sekyere Afram Plains, could not sit the exams at Drobonso, the first time a BECE Centre has been functional in the area. They had to sit the exams outside the district at neighbouring Atebubu all because the road leading to the district capital was comparatively not convenient.
So, for this reason, the appeal is as important as the praise on government to take up roads development in the Sekyere Afram Plains District as a matter of urgency.
