| CAF must ‘free’ African players from European clubs |

 Former Black Stars captain C.K. Akunnor has condemned European football clubs especially the English clubs for their reluctance to release African players to their national teams for the African Cup of Nations tournament.
Akunnor’s comment is in support of Manchester City and Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure’s claims that English clubs discriminate against African players who opt to play for their countries in the biennial competition held in January. The English Premier League which refuses to go on break during the yuletide often record fallouts with foreign players. Kolo Toure claims City continue to punish him for opting to go and play in the 2010 CAN in Angola. C.K. Akunnor wants CAF to deal with the recurring issue to preserve the pride of the African game. “Sometimes as a player when you come down to play for your nation, it is a good, it’s such a great thing that nobody can give it to you. Again when you go back, you find that they struggle… I remember (Samuel) Inkoom who came to play for Ghana, I think with the Olympics squad, he lost his position and was fined, he had to pay some money and all that. It’s a fact, the question is how do we deal with these things, and the question goes to CAF…” C.K. said the Ghana Football Association can take up the issue through CAF and insist that the clubs respect the players’ desire to play for their countries because the same clubs usually scout for good quality players who play for the national teams and it is unfair for them to turn round and deny the nations the services of the players. joy sports Comments (11)
