 The New Patriotic Party, (NPP) has dismissed a document reportedly by the Institute of Economic Affairs - Ghana (IEA) for abuse of incumbency in elections 2008 as the then ruling party.
Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, National Chairman of the NPP, noted that the supposed report from IEA is not credible and must be ignored by the general public. According to the supposed document from IEA, the public policy think-tank slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for abuse of incumbency in Elections 2008. “The most flagrant abuses involve the use of state vehicles, state security apparatuses, state officials, state venues and paraphernalia, and state helicopters to distribute campaign materials of its presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo,” the IEA said. “Last-minute flurry of sod-cutting for projects and its commissioning activities by then President John Agyekum Kufuor was seen as inuring to the benefit of the ruling NPP’s candidate,” IEA stated in a document released on Saturday. The document titled: “Report on the 2008 general elections in Ghana,” also said Nana Akufo-Addo “was awash in resources and some estimated him as out-spending his seven other presidential opponents put together by as much as 30:1 ratio”. According to the IEA, the NPP campaign for Elections 2008 was by far the most attractive and the most covered by the media. “It was a clear case of incumbency advantage at its best. The presidential candidate of the party had his photographs plastered on huge billboards all across the country. One could find his bill boards at every corner. “The IEA concluded that on the on the other hand the NDC embarked on a house-to-house campaign which was not as visible but nevertheless very effective,” the IEA concluded. However, speaking in an interview on Joy News on Monday, August 15, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey vehemently denied the allegations saying that the mere fact that the report cited that President Mills did not have a single bill board for his campaign indicated that the report could not be trusted. According to him, then candidate Mills had bill boards splashed across the country and it was erroneous for one to suggest that President Mills’ campaign was not as visible as that of Akufo-Addo. Meanwhile, Citi News sources at IEA have dismissed the report, stating that no such report has been prepared and released by the IEA.
