Today marks another crucial date in the diary of President John Evans Atta Mills and his political arch-rival, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, as the two take turns in front of a vetting committee of the governing party. The two aspirants for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 polls will take their turns for a screening exercise, as it were, for their suitability for the bids, before a vetting committee.

Nana Konadu is breaking her four-day campaign tour of the Ashanti region to honour the vetting invitation in Accra. Considered as a mere formality to satisfy the tenets of the party’s constitution, the two will definitely pass the test that awaits them today at the party’s Kokomlemle headquarters.

Such screenings are arranged to test candidates’ knowledge of the party and to subject them to probing questions raised about them from party faithful. Regarding these high-notched personalities, it is doubtful whether the panel will have any queries to deal with when it hosts them individually today.

Daily Guide is unable to confirm which of the aspirants will face the committee first, but sources close to Nana Konadu said she would be in the party office at 10am. The event will be bereft of the crowd-mustering feature noticed when the two persons went to pick their nomination forms.

The two aspirants, when they went to the party headquarters to pick their nomination forms, mustered their supporters in a muscle-flexing fashion as part of the psychological warfare both camps have adopted of late.

But perhaps, the most cacophonous and inconveniencing of the two nomination form-picking events was that of President Mills’, as it literally brought the city to a standstill, with vehicular traffic moving at a snail’s pace.

When an activist of the Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME) was contacted when the President’s completed forms were being returned, she stated that the fanfare that characterized the collection of the papers was not going to be seen, having served its purpose of showing the president’s strength.

Nana Konadu has intensified her bid of ousting President Mills as NDC flagbearer for the 2012 polls with a full force campaign of the Ashanti region.

She had stormed Kumasi with her husband, Mr. Rawlings for the June 4 celebration but did not return to Accra after the event.

Former President Rawlings announced at the June 4 celebration grounds that Nana Konadu would be staying in the Ashanti region to campaign for her presidential bid.

Nana Konadu enjoys massive support among the NDC members, especially delegates of the party in the Ashanti region, close sources in the NDC hinted Daily Guide. However, the former First Lady is said to be against complacency and is therefore willing to campaign vigorously to the congress day and win a first round victory.

Nana Konadu would tour all the 39 constituencies to interact with delegates. One of the campaign members expressed surprise about the strength and willpower that Nana Konadu has displayed so far since she began touring the country to meet delegates.
