 Five years ago when Charles Kpabitey was diagnosed with renal problem, little did he know that he would have to spend a fortune to stay alive.
According to him, he has to part with a minimum of GH¢ 2,700 monthly to purchase the needed drugs to keep him going and that is besides the amount of money he has to spend on drugs to treat the hypertension and diabetes he has contracted within the period. Thanks in part to the support of his former employers, Mr. Kpabitey is able to settle this huge amount monthly since his kind of ailment is not catered for by the National Health Insurance Scheme, a move Doctors at Korle Bu are hoping to see reversed. They are asking government to intervene by subsidizing the treatment of kidney failure. This came to light during a discussion on how to prevent kidney-related diseases on Multi TV’s current affairs show, pm: EXPRESS. A Physician Specialist, Dr. Winfred Baah who was on the show noted that 10 percent of all deaths at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are due to kidney failure whiles another 15 percent of patients reporting to the hospital suffer from kidney malfunction. Kidneys play vital roles in the human body by filtering the blood to rid it of waste products as well as balancing levels of electrolyte in the body, controlling blood pressure, and stimulating the production of red blood cells. Globally, diabetes is considered a leading cause of kidney failure followed by hypertension and inflammation of the kidney. But in Ghana, the lead cause of kidney failure is said to be hypertension but according to the specialist on the show “if we do a new study now, probably diabetes will top it because incidence of diabetes is rising” adding that other lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, drug abuse and the use of herbs for treating certain ailments, predispose people to kidney failure. Kidney failure is said to be prevalent among the active workforce within the 20 to 50 year bracket but the Dr. Baah says there is currently a 9-year old patient at Korle Bu on dialysis – a treatment used to remove waste and excess water from the blood – while a 17-year patient recently died from the disease. Explaining how the disease comes about, Mr. Kpabitey said kidney malfunction starts when one’s kidney is unable to rid the system of excess fluids which then adds on to other body fluids “and until it is your turn to go to the hospital to take out the excess fluid, you are creating problems for yourself.” “I have seen it many times, people who are not cautious of their fluid intake come to the hospital gasping for breath; because the water has climbed up and entered their lungs and they are drowning in their own urine because the space for air is taken up by excess fluids and toxins” he added. Kidney failure is largely silent and shows no symptoms. There are various degrees of the failure until your kidney finally shuts down. This health experts say necessitates regular health checks at least once a year. Mr. Kpabitey thus called on employers to insist that their employees go for a comprehensive medical checkup while on their annual leave to forestall any incidence of chronic kidney failure and to save lives. multi-tv
